Grassroots Coach
Job Description
Overview:
This is a position for a coaching role in the Grassroots program held by an Adult Coach that allows adult members and players to develop key skills while assisting with the development of our Grassroots program participants. This position encourages further personal/professional growth in the field of coaching with the requirement of NCCP Coach Training.
Wage: $17/ hour, considered a hired contractor. Payment methods can be flexible.
Reporting Relationship:
Under the direction of the Technical Director this role reports to the pertinent Program Coordinator. Jr. Coaches will also receive direction, training or scheduling notice from the Grassroots or Club Teams Administrator and the Technical Team member currently holding the "Grassroots Coach" portfolio.
Qualifications:
Must be 20 years of age and have completed all required coaching certifications as required by SQS listed below (appropriate time will be granted to complete this training prior to the program starting):
- RCMP Clearance
- Required Courses:
- NCCP Community Stream Coaching program for all ages being coached (theory and practical training)
- Making Headway in Sports
- Respect In Sport for Community Leaders
- Courses that are required, but that you have 30 days to complete after the program starts are:
- Safe Sport
- Rule of 2 Module
- Emergency Action Plan
- Making Ethical Decisions
Preference will be given to members in good standing with the Association.
Responsibilities:
- Must agree to and follow the Coaches Code of Conduct.
- Dress in approved coaching attire or is proper athletic wear for the activities undertaken including proper footwear, shin guards and socks. Hoodies and other items that pose safety concerns (such as necklaces) should not be worn during participation or demonstration of physical activities.
- Attend Junior Coaches/Grassroots Coaches’ meetings and Training Sessions.
- Understand basic Grassroots Standards as laid out by Canada Soccer.
- Setup and pack away all equipment, safety kit and soccer balls at the start and end of each session.
- Advise the Program Coordinator of any lost or damaged equipment.
- Attend scheduled sessions as designated by the Program Coordinator/Grassroots Administrator.
- Review and understand all assigned activity plans for each session and make sure that you have all equipment needed to run the activities.
- Advise the Program Coordinator and Grassroots Administrator prior to any sessions if you are unable to attend.
- Advise the parent volunteers of the activity being run in each session.
- Guide less experienced Junior Coaches and Team Coordinators to encourage them to assist in the sessions.
- Discuss with the Program Coordinator any issues that cannot be addressed within the activities.
- Report any player issues (injury, behavior, etc.) to the Program Coordinator immediately.
- Foster an inclusive atmosphere of encouragement between players to build their relationships.
- Immediately address any negativity, discrimination and/or bullying, as this will not be tolerated.
- Focus on the overall health and safety of players, building on physical literacy, as well as soccer skills. Make sure to also prioritize fun.
- Teach and encourage all relevant soccer skills for all activities and games.
- Ensure that you provide or facilitate a full demonstration on how to perform the steps of each activity, to create an environment that allows players to succeed.
- Be prepared to adjust sessions as you go, advancing and breaking down activities to suit player needs.
- Focus on player progress, providing lots of encouragement at the exact time when they are doing it right, to facilitate learning.
- Be a positive role model for young players and Junior Coaches and create an exciting environment for the young players to grow a love of the game of soccer.
- Comply with SSA protocols and endeavor to operate in alignments with our Guiding Principles.
